Water Conservation
By-law 2002-52 Respecting the Conservation of City Water in the Summer Months
On June 17, 2002, City Council passed By-law 2002-52 respecting the conservation of City water in the summer months. Highlights of the regulations in the By-law include the following.
Lawn and Garden Watering
In June, July and August, the use of pressurized water from the City Water System for watering lawns and gardens is permitted only under the following rules.
- Where the property being watered is on the even numbered side of the street, watering is permitted only on even numbered days of the month (maximum 3 hours in any 48 hour period).
- Where the property being watered is on the odd numbered side of the street, watering is permitted only on odd numbered days of the month (maximum 3 hours in any 48 hour period).
Exceptions
- Newly installed sod, turf, grass seed, newly planted trees, flowers, shrubs or plants may be watered on any day for a period of two weeks after being laid or planted.
- Hand held non-pressurized watering devices (such as watering cans and buckets) may be used on any day to water lawns and gardens.
Sidewalks, Drivewavs, Parking Areas, Patios and other Paved Areas
In June, July and August, the use of pressurized water from the City's Water System for washing sidewalks, driveways, paved areas, patios or any other paved areas is prohibited.
Exceptions
- Sidewalks, driveways, paved areas, patios or any other paved areas may be watered on any day where washing is necessary to protect public health (for example, to wash away shadflies).
- Hand held non-pressurized watering devices (such as watering cans and buckets) may be used on any day to wash sidewalks, driveways, paved areas, patios or any other paved areas.
