Youth Programs

Youth Week

This is to invite you to participate in a celebration of youth in our community. Youth Week will take place May 3 to 9 2010.

In support of youth week the organizing committee is inviting you to take part in one of two ways:

  • Community Youth Programs and Services
    We want to create a community resource that lists youth programs, services and special events. If you provide programs or services targeted at youth between the ages of 12 and 24 years of age, simply complete this form and return it to us. We will then post the information on the City of North Bay website under a "Youth Programs and Services" link. The information will also be added to our Calendar of Events.

    NORTH BAY NORDIC SKI CLUB YOUTH PROGRAMS
    Jackrabbit, Bunny rabbit and Challenge Group instruction programs for youth interested in learning skills and having fun. Development Team and Junior Race Team for youth who desire a more competitive environment. Most programs run from January to March, the Junior Race Team trains year round and some fall programs are available for Jackrabbits.

    TRINITY YOUTH
    Youth in high school and up meet for activities; music, drama and service projects. We have a youth drama group "Mustard Seed" and a youth band. All youth high school and older are welcome.

    OXFORD LEARNING
    Supplemental foundations in literacy and math offered as after school service, including enrichment, learning disabilities, study skills, organizational skills.

    NORTH BAY Y TITANS SWIM TEAM
    A team that provides opportunities for every individual to be physically fit and reach their maximum potential in swimming through a positive experience in the sport. We provide instruction and training for each swimmer from beginner to competitive National levels. Our swimmers gain confidence, sportsmanship, discipline, commitment and an understanding that success results from hard work and goal setting. They will learn the value of being part of a team.

    SUMMER HOOP CAMP
    Basketball camp for kids with the emphasis on fun and skill development. The mornings are for younger children and the afternoon sessions are for older kids.

    RINGETTE
    Ringette is a fast-paced sport played on ice with a straight stick (similar to a hockey stick with no blade and made up of wood, fiberglass or aluminum) and an 8" hollow rubber ring. Play is started by a free pass, similar to the start of a soccer game. The object is to score goals on the net of your opponent. It is similar to hockey and basketball; unlike hockey, the ring cannot be carried over the blue lines.

    This free program prepares students to embrace the world of work with a positive attitude, understand workplace safety, employer expectations and learn how to conduct a successful job search.

    JOB CONNECT
    Assists unemployed individuals to prepare for, obtain and maintain employment. Provides job development and placement support, a fully equipped resource centre and a variety of workshops (Job Search, WHMIS and Smart Serve)

    SUMMER JOBS FOR YOUTH 2010
    A summer job program developed for "disadvantaged" youth. The program provides pre-employment training, job placement and post-employment supports.

    SUMMER JOBS SERVICE (SJS)
    SJS is a free service that provides job search support and job postings to help students find summer jobs. Employers receive $2.00 per hour to hire students.

    YOUTH VOLUNTEERING - Cassellholme
    Possible activities could include a Birthday Party held on first Thursday of every month from 1:30 - 3:00 p.m. Monthly Special Events will be held on a variety of days/times. Bingos will be held on Tuesday afternoons and Thursday evenings. Musicians can perform on a variety of days/times and provides an opportunity for residents to listen to music/singing.

    PHOTOVOICE GALA
    Photovoice is an opportunity for youth to express themselves creatively through photographs on topics most relevant to them. The Gala will celebrate their accomplishments and give the participants a chance to show the community their work.

    NORTH BAY CANOE CLUB
    Instructional canoe and kayak paddling programs ranging from introductory level paddling to sprint racing, adult recreational and Dragon Boat programs.

    YOUTH OUTREACH WORKER INITIATIVE
    Through contact with the Youth Outreach Worker, youth can obtain valuable information and referrals with regards to local support services and obtain direction as a means of furthering their personal, educational and social objectives. Furthermore, the Youth Outreach Worker is actively seeking feedback from a youth perspective. As a result, an online survey has been created to provide youth an accessible outlet in which to provide direction, input and personalized feedback for the future development of local services for youth.

    LAKERS LACROSSE CAMPS AND LEAGUE
    Lakers Lacrosse will be running a series of camps during the spring/summer. Skill clinics will cover a physical training portion and the basic skills of Lacrosse. The objective is to build each player's skill level so that they are confident and fully able to participate in the lacrosse league

    BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF NORTH BAY AND DISTRICT
    We provide children and youth ages 4 - 24 with mentors, either in a group setting or a one on one relationship. Once registered in the program, we also host many different events and activities such as a camping trip, day trips out of North Bay, parties and other activities.

    YOUNG PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIP - Chamber of Commerce
    Young Professional (YP) members under the age of 30 can join at a reduced rate and are encouraged to participate in Chamber committees and there is also a YP Director position on the board. The Young Professional Committee has a number of members who seek out ways to actively engage our Young business community.

  • Celebrating Youth in our Community
    Youth are the future leaders of our businesses, communities and our country and as such should be recognized, celebrated and heard.

    We want to hear about youth that have impacted you or your organization in positive ways through leadership, service, or a particular achievement.

    These stories will be published on the "Youth Programs and Services" link page in celebration of these accomplishments. If you know of a youth you wish to celebrate, refer to the information package attached, complete the form and return it to us at the address provided.

    Nominee: STEPHANIE DAIGLE
    1. Stephanie is a 19 year old second year Physical Education Nipissing University honours student who is switching to nursing next fall. She pays for her education by working summers, part-time jobs during the school year and receives scholarships. She is an active member of her church youth group and teaches Sunday school. She is a member of the Nip/Can Christian Youth Group and has been chosen to be an executive member.
    2. Stephanie served as president of the Nipissing/Canadore Chapter of Best Buddies Canada. The chapter had faltered last year due to lack of leadership. Stephanie surrounded herself with a strong executive group and incorporated the group's ideas to revive the Chapter. She lead her executives to recruit mostly new student Buddies, held successful events, created enthusiasm and inspired dedication in all the Buddies
    3. Thanks to Stephanie, many University students as well as developmentally challenged adults in the community want to join this fall. The current high school chapters want more interaction with the university chapters and there are 4 more high schools that want to start chapters this fall. Stephanie has given the North Bay and Area Best Buddy Chapters a shot of adrenalin.

    Nominee: PHILLIP CARMICHAEL
    1. Phillip is a grade 11 student. He is completing his Business High Skills Major, competing in DECA competitions and acts as the business manager and safety captain for the Near North Student Robotics Initiative. He is a dedicated student, an effective role model and a respected ambassador for Chippewa, the Near North District School Board and the City of North Bay.
    2. As a senior student on the Near North Student Robotics Initiative (Team 1305), Phil has led this year's team to awards in Entrepreneurship and safety. He facilitates and participates with the team at a variety of outreach events including Relay for Life, Patrick4Life, and Engineer's Night. Presentations, public speaking, mentoring new members and maintaining high team standards are all part of Phil's contribution to our team.
    3. Phillip is an exceptional role model for youth. He approaches all experiences in a kind, caring and respectful manner. Phil supports others towards their personal goals and provides the platform to encourage excellence and goal setting. Outside of school Phil is also an active member of his church where he runs the nursery, supports the Sunday School program and assists with accounting. He also helped to implement and run a Youth Camp during the summer months.

    Nominee: PAUL ENSOM
    1. Paul is a recent graduate of Nipissing University with a four-year Geography degree, has been a Youth Community Leader volunteer for two years and is a YMCA lifeguard. Paul is very pro-active and motivated. Paul is behind two YCL courses: "Backwood Adventures" and "Cook like a Champ." Both are skill development courses relating to outdoor survival techniques and cooking/meal planning in the kitchen.
    2. With a very heavy schedule, Paul has managed to reach out to high school aged youth by providing them with two courses a week that will look great on a resume. Paul has also trained youth in facilitation and community development techniques. Paul consistently promotes youth engagement throughout our community, is highly involved in community consultation, community focus groups and report writing

    Nominee: SAMANTHA DEPATIE
    1. Samantha's Fiddle and Stepdance School is a new sole proprietorship, owned and operated by Samantha Depatie offering music and dance instruction for children and adults in the city of North Bay. With over 12 years of dance and fiddle experience, Samantha opened her very own dance school in the fall of 2009. She has been steadily growing her business and deeply cares about her clients and its success. Although Samantha is one of the youngest school owners in the city, she consistently shows her ability to connect with her clients to determine their needs and delivers solid programming.
    2. Samantha has remained heavily involved in the arts community since becoming an instructor (2003) at Chad's School of Fiddle and Stepdance. Since opening in the fall of 2009, Samantha has been looking forward to implementing her 2010 March break and summer dance programs that she had developed in the business planning stages.
    3. Samantha attended Portage Christian Academy in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. She decided to return to North Bay in hopes of establishing herself as a respected dance enthusiast in the community. Samantha continues to receive positive references from her clients who hold her in very high regard. She is a true role model for young women looking to pursue their dream of dance.

    Nominee: ALEX CHURCHER
    1. Alex is a grade 7 student with a learning disability. He is involved in Scouts and is very knowledgeable with computers.
    2. Alex has taught teachers, entire classes, students individually and parents how to use assistive technology at our school. It is best for some, but good for ALL!
    3. Alex is a true advocate for the use of technology and has helped many adults and students understand why technology is important and has taught them how to use it based on individual needs.

    Position: Resource Teacher
    Group: Near North District School Board

    Nominee: ALEX WILCOX
    1. Alex is the dynamic captain of the Near North Student Robotics Initiative (NNSRI), a group that spans 7 local schools. In addition to being an honours student, Alex is a cross-country runner. He commits approximately 20-40 hours per week to the Robotics Club.
    2. Alex led a school initiative to start a junior robotics team at Chippewa intermediate School that included under-engaged students. In addition, Alex has led in more than 28 outreach events including Relay for Life and King George Street Fair.
    3. Under Alex's leadership, the team has experienced tremendous growth and continued success. Locally it promotes science & technology and provides opportunity for young men and women regionally and internationally. This club is known for its many awards. In March 2010 the team once again earned "Engineering Inspiration and now ranks as the top team worldwide in this category.

    Nominee: JERRI CLOUT
    1. Jerri has mad a real difference in her work with Patrick4life. She has become the youth ambassador for the organization, which is dedicated to educating people about how to prevent the transmission of HIV/AIDS. All this came about when her friend Patrick got HIV through a blood transfusion and died of AIDS.
    2. Jerri has been involved in the following: Co-chair Patrick4Life events, radio contests to promote events, HIV/AIDS awareness featured in the new McGraw Hill textbook, Youth in Motion's Top 20 Under 20. Received the following awards: Chamber of Commerce Student of the Year Award, Rotary Student's Service Above Self Award, Chairman's Award for Robotics Canada. Attended the Canada-wide Science Fair, Historia's Encounters with Canada, Nipissing Business Challenge Bowl (1st Place) and Rotary's World Affairs Seminar.
    3. Jerri has helped the first annual Run/Walk4Patrick which raised $46,000 and also formed Youth4Youth which encourages teenagers to become involved and educated in HIV/AIDS issues. Jerri is a great role model for peers.

    Nominee: JOCELYN BEGIN & MEGAN BONENFANT
    1. Megan and Jocelyn both participated in Summer Company in 2009 and ran two unique businesses. Megan ran a sewing school business while Jocelyn ran a cake designing business. Both were exceptional entrepreneurs throughout the summer and were both able to use their creativity and talents through the summer to help run their business.
    2. After Summer Company, Megan and Jocelyn wanted to join their business and make a school for sewing and design called Passion Arts. Both girls worked together to apply for the SEVEC funding Youth Taking Action Program in which they received funding to organize a program that helped better the community. Megan and Jocelyn teamed up with the After School Program and were successful at giving back to the community.
    3. Both Jocelyn and Megan devoted many hours to community through their after school program and really gave the participants a sense of accomplishment.

    Nominee: MEGAN STICKLE
    1. Megan is an outgoing girl. She is very friendly and has a cheery disposition. She is always smiling and laughing.
    2. Megan is a wonderful volunteer in our school community. She is eager to help out at all school events and does so with enthusiasm and great effort.
    3. Megan is a good role model for the students in her class as well as all students from kindergarten to grade 8. She has a great positive influence.
